The value of a photo

I just happened across this blog post from a Californian Photographer, and thought it was worth a re posting here. The photographer in question has encouraged that this be shared with others.

The situation as I understand it was as follows;
The photographer found a letter on their doorstep from a client of theirs and after another client complained about the cost of the photographers prints, the photographer chose to post this letter to their blog.
It's certainly a moving and thought provoking letter for those of us who make their living from Photography.

Here's the letter;

July 2nd, 2011

Jeanine -

Today I am writing for a couple of reasons. I have some quiet time at the moment and need to get a couple of things off my mind. I will leave this for my husband to deliver to you when he is ready.

You photographed my wedding, you photographed my first pregnancy and my first baby. I contacted you awhile back to photograph my 2nd child and family. After getting prices and realizing I would want all of the pictures as we love your work – I decided against spending $500+ – which is what I normally spend for portraits and prints with you.. Please know it is not because I don’t value your amazing eye, or how much we love the experience.

That week that I decided to NOT do a session with you, this is how I spent some money.

On Sunday I called and cancelled our session. Monday I went out and got my hair cut ($39+tip), and colored ($65), Thursday I had my nails done ($24), my family went out to dinner at a somewhat expensive restaurant for no particular reason costing us $79 + tip. This was just 4 days since canceling our session, already totaling over $200 for un necessary things. My nails only lasted about 2 weeks, my hair is gone, and seven weeks passed when I got the phone call from our doctor. It was not something I expected and the cancer has spread very quickly. I will be leaving my husband, my 6 year old girl and my now 2 year old – not by choice. It is very hard for me to talk about it which is why I need to write you.

I watch your Facebook page and your posts about the value of a photo and if I could give back all of those things that I purchased this few weeks after I cancelled my session with you, knowing what I know now, and have that session, well… I would do it in a heartbeat.

Now my time is done and there are no more chances for me. The next time someone cancels a session – my wish is that you forward this letter to them. Time is fragile, it is gone before you know you had it. If you charged $200 for one print it wouldn’t be enough for what it is actually worth. I cringe to think that my priorities were a manicure over a memory to pass onto my babies and husband.

My love and thanks for what you have given us from past photos. I am so sorry that I did not see it as more than paper until now.

Northbrook Park Hindu Wedding - Simon & Sutha, Day2

Day two of Simon and Sutha's wedding was just as much fun as day one.

This time it was a more traditionally English affair with a civil ceremony being held the stunning grounds of Northbrook Park.
The boys were a little worse for ware from the drinking session held after the Hindu ceremony the day before, but they got themselves up and even went down the pub for a quick pint before the ceremony on the second day.

Sutha looked ravishing in her white dress as I'm sure Simon will agree, and the day went smoothly and was a lot of fun, complete with sparklers and Chinese lanterns.

Painshill Park Hindu Wedding - Simon & Sutha, Day1, Part 2

Here's part 2 of the wonderful Hindu Wedding of Simon and Sutha.
I won't add much more to what I wrote in the last post, instead I'll get straight into the main event and show you the photos.

These garlands have a similar significance to rings in western weddings apparently. Correct me if I'm wrong on that one.

There were lots of coconuts being chopped up.

The ceremony over, we headed out into the park for some photos.

One of the last parts of the wedding was the guests queuing up to have their photos taken with the Bride and Groom, and as each group reached the newly weds they sprinkled them with rice, which I think was a kind of good luck blessing.

Painshill Park Hindu Wedding - Simon & Sutha, Day1, Part 1

I'm going to split this first day of Simon and Sutha's wedding over 2 posts as there's just too many to put into one blog post.

This was my first, hopefully of many more, Hindu wedding, and I had a great time learning the traditions and witnessing the colours and ceremony of it all. It was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to doing more in the future.

My impression of day one, the traditional Hindu part of the wedding, was of a very relaxed affair, with people able to go and get drinks and chat throughout. I was also thrilled to see that so many people entered into the Hindu theme with many people wearing Hindu style clothing, possibly for the first time.

Here's the first half of the photos from day one.

The tradition started just inside the door where the bride was getting ready.

And this was where the Groom was preparing.

I'm not sure of the significance, but it was part of the traditions. And made for a great photo.

Simon & Sutha - London Pre Wedding Shoot

This was a fun shoot to do. It was a little precarious whether we could use the locations we wanted to at the start due to some fairly dire weather predictions, but, it all worked out in the end and I'm trilled with the photos we got. We went a little off the beaten track with this one, avoiding the main streets and choosing the path less trodden, and I feel the photos are better for it.

I find that I tend to work really well with new locations, places I haven't shot in before as they're fresh to me and filled with new ideas.
During wedding meetings I'm often asked if I have shot at a venue before, and as often as not, due to the amount of venues in Surrey (we're spoiled in Surrey) I have to say no. This should not put people off, in fact, I usually see it as a plus as I'm visiting the venue fresh and I always find myself filled with ideas and photos I want to try.

But I digress, only to say that when Simon and Sutha booked me, I had not shot at either of the two venues they had booked for their 2 day wedding before.

So, without further ramblings from me, here's some piccies. :-)

Surrey Wedding Photography Albums

The ultimate product from your wedding is your Album. When you think about it, it's perhaps the only actual physical product you get from your wedding.
Everything else is used or consumed on the day, where as your album is the one thing you have after your wedding is passed.

So, with that in mind, I thought I'd share a couple of recent Album orders with you, here's the first.

By far the most popular Album I offer is this landscape Art Album. Here the couple have chosen a brown premium Leather with 3 Apertures and silver blocking for the writing on the cover. The amount of choice you have for your cover is HUGE, so you really can make it your own.

You can see the quality of the workmanship on these Albums. I've worked with a few suppliers now, and these guys are great!

The couple also chose to have 2 parent Albums, and chose a glossy brown leather for them that went with the colour scheme of their main album.

Fiona & Andy Pre Wedding Photography in Surrey

Fiona and Andy are getting married next year at Cain Manor which I'm really looking forward too. It was decided that we would do their pre-wed shoot near the couple home in the woods there to get some of the lovely Autumnal feel going on.

We had a lovely time and I'm really looking forward to the big day in the spring next year.

Here's some of my favorites.

The day wasn't too autumnal after all, and was really rather warm.

But we did get some lovely colours.

Jo & Nick's Autumn Portrait Shoot in Surrey

Sometimes, for whatever reason, we don't get time to do the Pre Wedding Shoot before the wedding. It could be time pressures or scheduling difficulties, or any number of reasons, so when that happens, we just do the shoot after the wedding instead.

This is an example of one such shoot.
I forget the exact reason why this happened after the wedding, but I believe it was due to a lack of time before the wedding to fit it in, so we did it now instead.

So this ended up being a rather lovely autumn family portrait shoot in a lovely leafy part of Surrey known as Waggoners Wells. I'd never heard of it before, but I'm so glad Jo and Nick chose it as their shoot location, and even more so because it was autumn, meaning we had a low sun casting its bright golden light over the Surrey countryside that day.

Direct sunlight, especially the low autumn light is both beautiful and difficult to work with, it's all about how you use it, but when it's done well, you get stunning shots like these below.

Surrey Celebrate the Dress - Gavin & Marian in London

I love doing these shoots. Call them Trash the Dress, Celebrate the Dress or Rock the Frock Shoots, it really doesn't matter, there's so many names for them now, but essentially it's a shoot in your wedding gear after your wedding day. Gavin and Marian were really keen to do one of these shoots, and as a very arty couple who really enjoyed their Bridal shots on their wedding day, I knew they would be game for good shoot. They chose to do the shoot up in London, so we met at Hyde Park Corner and off we went around London, passing Buckingham Palace in the midst of a changing of the guard, ending up somewhere near Victoria station.We had a lovely autumnal day for this shoot with the sun low in the sky giving us some gorgeous golden light. Here's some of my favorites from the shoot.

We only got a few shots here due to too many curious tourists, some of whom insisted on taking photos themselves, much to Gav & Marian's amusement.

Surrey Wedding | Kate & Oli - Painshill Park, Cobham

Kate and Oliver came to hire me through Kate's dad who knows me through the camera club I attend, and I'm so glad they did come to me as Kate and Oli have been great fun to work with.

We did a Pre-Wedding shoot down in the New Forest we I have yet to Blog, so I'll get onto that asap.

Their wedding took place at St Nicolas's Church in Bookham, the Church at which my wife and I nearly got married but had to change to our local parish one when we moved, but that's another story for another time maybe.
I have to say, working at St Nicolas's was a breeze, a real breath of Fresh air. The vicar was very easy going and let my assistant and I work in our usual discreet manor with no restrictive rules.This happens so rarely now that I feel it's worth a mention!

We had lovely weather on the big day, which was a great change from the cold and wet weather during the week leading up to it.

The reception was at Painshill Park in Cobham, which if you have never been to it, is a lovely venue with a huge permanent marquee and stunning grounds for photography.

Finally I think it's also worth mentioning the great lighting we had for the evening dancing, which you can see towards the bottom of this post. It really made for some stunning photos, not least of which because they used a fog machine, something that can only be done in marquees now due to fire restrictions.
Anyway, here's the photos, enjoy.

Surrey Wedding Photography | Nancy & Simon, Running Horses Pub

The wedding of Nancy and Simon was a lovely quaint little wedding in the Surrey hills. I've known Nancy for a while so when she asked me to do their wedding, I of course accepted and had been looking forward to the big day with anticipation.
They held their reception at the Running Horses near Dorking, and got married over the road from the pub at the village church. I don't think i will ever do a wedding again where the church and reception are so close. It was that close I was calling people over from the pub for the formals. If you have never been to the Running Horses, then I highly recommend that you check it out, it's a great little pub and the food there is first class.
The wedding went very well indeed and the pub was full of merriment afterwards as the guests mingled.
Thanks to Claudia for assisting me, you were great!

Surrey Wedding |Caroline & Justin - Bull Hotel

One thing I love about shooting weddings is the lovely families I get to meet, and the wedding of Caroline and Justin was no exception, as the families were warm, friendly and very welcoming. There were some great moments during this wedding as well, not least of which was Justin's emotional grooms speech, during which he seemed a little overwhelmed by the whole day. Suffice to say I had a great time at their wedding, so without further ado, onto the photos.

I've not blogged in a few weeks now, and I thought it was about time I did something about that, but, there's been a very good reason for my lack of blogging. That reason is called Harry Thomas and we was born 3 weeks ago today and weighed 9 pounds.Normal service will resume shortly, but in the mean time, I'm sure you'll want to see some photos. These were taken a few days after Harry was born, when he was a little more sleepy then he is now.

Here's James with his new Brother. His exact words while taking this photo were; "It's a baby!"

Surrey Wedding | Lisa & John | Oaks Farm

Lisa and John's wedding was one I was looking forward to for several reasons, firstly John is a Retoucher with Net-a-Porter so I knew he appreciated photography, secondly, Lisa, although not confident infront of the camera, was a great model in our Engagement shoot so I knew I'd get great shots of them both, and thirdly, the church was one I used to drive past twice a day on my daily commute back when I had a day job, and I was always intrigued by it as it looks just like a house rather then a church.

Apart from a small downpour at the end of the service, meaning that the family groups took place inside the church, the day went swimmingly and everyone had a great time.

Sarah & Jonathon's Surrey Pre Wedding Photography

The other week I met up with Sarah & Jonathon in Claremont Landscape Garden to get some nice shots of them before their wedding.

Claremont was a wonderful location and we were spoiled for places to take some shots, and both Sarah & Jon were great subjects and really got into the flow of the shoot as we walked round.

Everyone always starts off in the shoots nervous and self conscious, even I feel a little touch of nerves at the start of each of these shoots, more so then on a wedding to be honest, but within 5 to 10 mins of starting, I start to see how the couple works, how they respond to me and each other and start to work out how to get the best from them.
This is a benefit of a Pre Wedding shoot, the photos are great, but they're a bonus after the main benefit of getting to know my couple better before their wedding.

So, here's some favourites from Sarah & Jon's shoot.

London Pre Wedding Photography - Caroline & Justin

I met Caroline and Justin on London for our pre-wedding shoot on what must have been one of the busier Sundays in town. Our chosen meeting point had a road cycle race running through it which led to some fun and games meeting up, but we got there and headed out into the city streets for some photos.

Caroline and Justin were great subjects, we wandered round town visiting some well known landmarks and chatted and laughed as we did so.
Justin freely admits to being not too confident in-front of the camera, but he did a Sterling job and I think he will be pleased with the results.

Caroline looked stunning in her summer dress, and for most of the shoot it was the perfect outfit, until the very end when the heavens opened as we crossed the millennium bridge meaning there was literally no cover from the elements, yep, we got a bit cold and wet, not that this dampened our spirits in the slightest. So we took refuge in a nearby pub, but it soon became clear that the rain was hear to stay so we called it a day.

We got a great set of photos though and you can see some of my favorites below.

Rebecca and Richard tied the knot on a lovely day in July, literally the day before I went on holiday, so it's taken me a little longer to post these to the blog then I'd like, but I'm catching up on my workload now however.

Their wedding was a whole heap of fun, with lots of laughter and merriment throughout. The Berystede is a lovely venue, the rooms were spacious and there's lots of places for some fun photography.

Nick & Chika | Surrey Wedding - Bingham Hotel

For a while there I thought we'd had our summer, but it looks like things have warmed up a bit again, and it was on one of these hot days just recently that I covered the wedding of Nick and Chika. We had gorgeous blue skies and lovely warm sunshine all day.

You might remember that I did an Engagement shoot with them in Oxford a short while ago, which you can see here if you didn't see it.

Nick & Chika tied the knot at the Bingham Hotel near Kingston. The hotel is right next to the Thames and really is a stunning location for a wedding.

Video Interview

I'm always striving to find the best way to put across what I do and who I am on my website, after all, it's often said that people buy people rather then product.

One recent phenomenon that been brought on by faster Internet speeds is the importance of video. We all have video capable phones these days and are able to upload them to YouTube seconds after we have filmed it. This has led to a change in the way we use video, and it's becoming more and more popular. One aspect of this is the video interview where companies have little videos on their site to show people who they are and what they do.

I've been interested in having a video interview on my site for a while, and when the opportunity came along to have one done, I couldn't refuse.

So in stepped Chris from Lumiere Films who followed me out on an Engagement shoot and then did a short video interview with me before working his magic in the editing suit.

I'm over the moon with the result and think it's slick, professional and brilliant.
I'd highly recommend Chris to anyone who wanted a similar video doing.

I also want to thank Gavin and Marian for their cooperation with me and Chris on their engagement shoot, you were amazing and real sports!

And thank you to Rosie as well who assisted me that day.

Marian & Gavin | The Ramster, Surrey Wedding

I loved shooting Marian and Gavin's Wedding.
Right from the start they were keen for me to indulge my creative side, they wanted me to just do what I do, which is what I did.
They found me because of the wedding of Eve and Chris that I did at the Ramster last year, which goes to show that Google really does work!

I did the Engagement shoot for Marian and Gavin only a short time ago, and it really does make such a difference to the wedding day when you have done such a shoot as you know each other and you know how to work together meaning the day runs just that bit smoother.

Anyway, we had a great day, and here's some of my favorite shots from the day.

Nick & Chika's Engagement Session

With their wedding just a few short weeks away, I recently met up with Nick & Chika in Oxford for their Pre-Wedding Engagement Shoot.
Nick studied at Oxford and it's clear that it's somewhere that's close to this couples hearts.

Oxford is a beautiful town and full of character, so we were never short of places to take photos as we wandered the streets.

Chika is from Japan, and her parents live fairly close to where the Earthquake hit just a few short months ago. Luckily her family are fine, and we're hoping to see some of them at the wedding.

Gill & Paul | Alexander House Surrey Wedding

Gill & Paul tied the not a short time ago at Alexander House, a stunning Hotel and Spa with some really friendly staff who were a joy to work with.

There had clearly been a lot of thought put into their wedding and a great day was had by all I'm sure.
Firstly we had the amazing and brilliant Singer/pianist Jennie Sawdon playing in the ceremony and during the drinks reception, many people commented on how they thought a CD was playing it sounded so professional, and I heartily agree that Jennie is an amazing live singer.

Later on during the meal we were treated to a rendition by The Three Waiters, who were also a big highlight. They treated this wedding like an MI5 mission, with 2 of them posing as waiters, serving wine and dealing with the wedding guests and one of them posing as a guest on a table, complete with cover story, until part way through the meal when they went into their act which was a mix of singing and comedy.

Later on for the first dance we were also treated to another singer, this time a Michael Buble tribute singer who was also very, very good.

Redesign

You may have noticed that I have just gone live with a brand new look.

Yep, don't worry, it's still me, but I thought it was long overdue for me to have a complete overhaul of my visual identity, and after a lot of work behind the scenes, including building a new Website from scratch, I've finally got there.

I still need to order new business cards and other bits and pieces, but the bulk of the work is done!

I hope you like my lighter and more purple theme, and no doubt in a few years I'll want to redesign it all again! :-)

Neeta & Gavin | Surrey Wedding at Little Dudly House, Dorking

Very recently I had the please of photographing the wedding of Neeta and Gavin who tied to knot at Little Dudley House in Dorking.
This was Little Dudley House's first wedding, and I was honored to be the first photographer to work there, I certainly hope to do so again soon.

Neeta & Gavin's wedding was great fun, from Gavin's little geeky touches such as the exit music (Superman) through to the funky dancing in the evening to Jai Ho.
The wedding itself was a small affair with only 30 odd people there, but the evening made up for it with over 100.

Gavin & Marian - Surrey Love story, Newlands Corner, Silent Pool & Shere.

Here we have Gavin and Marian, they're getting married in late May, and for their Pre-Wedding Engagement Shoot, we chose to take in the sights of some traditional Surrey Countryside.

We started off at Newlands Corner, taking in it's stunning view, then travelled up the road to Silent Pool, the place where Agatha Christie's car was found when she disappeared, and then we finally headed to the village of Shere, a lovely little village, popular with tourists and often used in Hollywood films.

We had a great time doing this shoot which was full of laughter and fun, and I can't wait to cover their wedding as well.

Lisa & John - Surrey Engagement Pre Wedding Shoot, Box Hill.

Having introduced engagement shoots as a standard part of my wedding packages now, I'm looking forward to doing more of these over the coming months.

This particular shoot was with Lisa and John, who are getting married in August.
John's a photo-retoucher for Nat-a-porter so the pressure was on to do a good job of these.

Lisa was a little nervous about these photos, and of her wedding pics too, but I have to say, I really don't know why, she's a good looking girl with no reason to worry! If you agree, post a comment below.

We chose Box Hill as our location for the shoot, it's a lovely place to visit with stunning views over Dorking and the surrounding area.

Jo & Nick | Surrey Wedding @ Gate Street Barn

I recently had the pleasure of working at Gate Street barn again to cover the wedding of Jo and Nick.
These two got together at Kick Boxing class so they've spent many an hour kicking and punching each other... all in the name of fitness you understand!

It was another blistering hot day with blue skies and barely a cloud in sight all day long. Bright direct sunlight always makes for challenging lighting conditions, but with a little bit of knowledge you can usually make it work in your favor.

I do love weddings that have something a little different or quirky about them, and it Jo and Nick's they had a display of Birds of Prey in the grounds of the barn. It really made for some excellent photos and provided some great entertainment for the guests.

So, here's some photos for you.

Rob & Nat's Wedding | Bedford Swan Hotel

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of covering the wedding of a good friend of mine, and fellow wedding photographer, Rob, and his partner Natalie.
Rob got into professional photography a few years after me and he has assisted me on a number of occasions.

When he asked me to cover his wedding for him, I felt very honored that he wanted me to do it, and so I accepted.

The day itself was one of the hottest of the year so far, although there's been a few of those recently haven't there.
It was a very happy affair and filled with laughter and fun throughout, including a couple of speeches that were really very funny and perhaps the best wedding cake I have ever seen. Seriously, this will take some beating!

Yep, thats Darth Vader on those cup cakes. Well done Nat, Rob was clearly thrilled at your surprise, and the creation certainly seemed to go down well with the guests.

Scrap Yard Fashion

I've mentioned before about the importance of personal shoots, about how it's vital for us photographers to do shoots outside of our day job to keep things interesting and fun and to allow us to try things outside of our comfort area in a risk free situation when it doesn't matter if things go wrong.

One of my most recent shoots of this nature was a little more involved however and certainly worth me posting about it here.

I took it upon myself to organize a group shoot with 5 other photographers, 5 models and 2 Make Up Artists at a local Scrap Yard in Dorking.

The day went really rather well and everyone seemed to have a great time and get some great images.

Surrey Photographers Shoot Swap @ Virginia Water

Something I love to do is to network with other photographers, for starters it's an essential part of my business to have strong links with other photographers in my area as it can lead to work in it's own right.
But by far one of the most fulfilling parts of all this networking is meeting and befriending so many lovely people. Everyone is very open and friendly and more then happy to help and offer advice, and every once in a while a bunch of us meet up and network, but also sometimes we do some shooting as well.

Very recently I attended one such event at Virginia Water and we all took turns to pose and to take photos. It's great to see whats it's like on the other side of the camera every now and again and this was one such opportunity.

Gatton Manor is a leafy surrey golf club in the surrey hills, and I was privileged to cover the wedding of Anna and Gary there just the other week.

This wedding as all about emotion. It was clear very early on just how much the bride and groom loved each other, the ceremony was filled with tears of joy and there was a lot of happiness in the room. That same emotion was apparent once again during the speeches that held every ones rapt attention.

Anna - Womens Touch Rugby England Captain

Last year I had the honour of shooting the wedding of Anna and Mike, and it was int he run up to, and during the speeches of that wedding I found out that Anna was something of an athlete, and is the current Captain of the England Womens Touch Rugby Team.

Suffice to say, I just had to do a Rugby themed shoot with her.

Using the Hollywood style lighting I've been experimenting with, we met up on a cold rugby pitch in south west London and set about the shoot.
Anna was a trooper, braving the cold and the cat calls from a mens rugby team that passed us by to create a great mini set of photos.

Here's a few details of Anna's career so far;
She been playing for the England Womens Open Grade since 2005 and captained the side since 2010.
She's played in 3 European Championships (Edinburgh, Paris, Bristol) - England are the current title holders and haven't lost a final during Anna's time with the squad.

She played in the 2005 New Zealand All Nations tournament hosted by Christ Church.
She also played in the 2007 World Cup in Stellenbosch, South Africa. England came 3rd Behind South Africa, NZ, and the winners Australia.

Anna is currently training for the 2011 World Cup due to be hosted by Scotland in June and was awarded best player for the England Womens Open team at last years European Champs, as voted by coaches and captains from other European teams.

When you buy a service from a small business, especially if you're selling over the internet, it's so important to include a photo of yourself (and your team if you have one) as the client is often buying into you just as much as they're buying into the business.

Exquisite Air Charter

Following on from my shoot with David Jaques and Jaques Construction, I then went to meet Philip Cartwright who runs Exquisite Air Charter, another member of our Trusted Contacts Networking Group who offers private air charter to destinations around the world.

We met at Farnborough Airport and headed out onto the tarmac to get some photos of Philip in front of one of the planes.
Here's one of the images where I experimented with some edgy lighting again.

It's perhaps not every ones cup of tea, but I'm trying to push myself to do something a little out of my comfort zone and try something more complicated, and for my second try, I'm rather pleased.
Following on from this, I have some shots of the female England Touch Rugby Captain to blog very soon done in a similar style that I'm really over the moon with!

I also got the chance to do some shots of the plane that's behind him.

Oh how the other half live hey?

Surrey Portraits - David Jaques

I've been very inspired by the kind of Hollywood lighting you see on film posters etc recently and so did some research on the way this is done in an effort to push my photography forward.
Once I knew the formula it was simply a matter of putting it into practice.

I'm a member of a local business networking group called Trusted Contacts, so I asked a few of it's members if they would kindly pose for me while I experimented with the style.

You can see the first photo I did in this style below.

This is David Jaques. He's the owner of Jaques Construction, a high quality bespoke house builder who works in the Surrey area. Here he is stood in front of one of his latest projects.
For the techies out there;
This image is actually a composite of 10 photos, 9 of which create a HDR effect.

I've done a few more of these and hope to do even more soon, I'll post the results here of course.

SWPP Seminar & Convention

Last week it was the Annual SWPP (Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers) convention. There was a week of seminars and master classes by some of the top photographers in the country and indeed the world as well as a trade show where we got to drool over the nice shiny equipment on offer.

I personally attended a Seminar on Thursday and the Trade show on Friday.

The Trade show was fun and I got to sit in on a few discussions on the business of photography, but the real fun was had on Thursday when I attended a Seminar by Fashion and Celebrity Photographer Damian McGillicuddy.

The idea was to head down into one of the London Undergrounds abandoned stations and learn some off camera flash techniques.
Damian was a great teacher for the day and a real character, he had us laughing a joking while still imparting his huge knowledge base to us.

I took the camera and snapped away during the seminar, and here's a few images from the workshop.

We started outside the Aldwych Tube Station with Damian (holding the camera), his assistant Ian (Holding the light) and the Model, Ulorin Vex (That's not her real name by the way).

Damian's main set up for the day, Ian, his assistant plays the role of 'Hooded Claw' running from the tunnel behind Ulorin.

Then we got to play with the set up Damian created.

Unfortunately the Flash in the tunnel behind Ian died and we had to do without it. So I cloned out Ian from this image and kept the focus on the Model.

Here's some of the other delegates taking their turn.

Then we got another go using his set up.

The workshop over, we headed back up to the surface.

We had a great time and I want to thank Damian and his team, the Model Ulorin Vex and London Underground to allowing us to do this.

Ramster Wedding Photographer | Eve & Chris

A little over a week ago I had my last wedding of 2010, that of Eve and Chris at the Ramster, a lovely venue south of Guildford.

We luckily dodged the snow, happening as it did on the weekends bookending this one, but it was indeed somewhat chilly.
Luckily the love on show warmed every ones heart that day.

One of the things I'm able to do for my clients is to tailor my photos to suit your tastes somewhat, and Eve asked if I could do more Black and White shots then usual. Of course I said yes and made sure I converted more then my usual amount to Black and White. Don't worry though, there's still plenty of colour ones.

Surrey Wedding Photographer - Claire & Paul - Albury Park

Looking out the window as a write this, the world has changed into a winter wonderland, a world away from the one in the photos you will see below! What is it about snow that bring the world to a stand still?
Well, the UK anyway.

Claire and Paul got married at St Mary's Church in Long Ditton before having their reception at Albury Park in Surrey.
Albury Park is a wonderful venue with lots of opportunities for photos, but sadly this was to be the venue's last wedding as they are moving onto other things.
However, this didn't dampen anyone's spirits, if anything, it made us determined to send the venue off in style!

Here's some of my favourite photos from Claire and Pauls Wedding.

Bridal Fashion Shoot with Fifi

I love experimenting with lighting and doing something a little creative with my photography, it keeps me fresh and also gives me something for my portfolio.

It's very important as a photographer, and as an Artist in general, to make sure you make time for some personal work. A wedding is great, but there's not much time for experimentation, trying something new and untried, and pushing the boundaries of your own experience. I try to do a little bit of that on each wedding that I do, but you can't spend a couple of hours on it and really take your time on it.

Which is why I (and most photographers out there that take their work seriously) feel it's very important to make time to do just that.
So I try to schedule in a shoot, once every so often where I shoot with a model, often as not with a Bridal theme and on location (although this one was done on a white background), and I use the time to try out new lighting techniques, posing ideas, photo ideas, or to explore new shooting locations.
These new techniques etc, once I feel confident enough in doing them, can then be applied to weddings and portrait shoots where I'm under more pressure to deliver.

I also get some funky new images for my portfolio, as you can see below!
The model is Fifi.
All these were done with a white background, a couple of dresses and either 1, 2 or 3 lights.

3 lights, one on either side, and a third above and in front.

This Dress was Fifi's own, and it worked rather well I feel.

Fifi was keen to show off her converse which she matched with pink shades.

In addition to lighting, I tried a new(well, new to me anyway) post production technique in photoshop with this one which really brings out the details and gives an edgy look to the image.

Surrey Wedding, Anna & Mike, Horsley Towers

A short time ago I had the pleasure of photographing Anna & Mike's Wedding at Horsley Towers in Surrey. Just up the road from me in fact.
As you'll see below, the weather on the day started out lovely, but mid way through the Bridal Preparations, the heavens opened and the rest of the day it threw it down, meaning we were pretty much inside for the rest of the day, but, with Horsley Towers being such a gorgeous venue, inside and out, it really wasn't an issue.

We got some stunning photos, I think you'll agree, and a great time was had by all.
So, without further ado, here's some photos.

London Babymoon Photography - Sana & Zee

Ever heard of a Babymoon? Neither had I until I spoke with Sana and Zee about their shoot.
They came over from Houston Texas to London for their Babymoon, which is a final holiday as just a couple before your first baby.
I was only too happy to do this shoot, and both Sana & Zee were totally relaxed and natural before the camera.
Sana was a real trooper, walking round London while pregnant is never going to be easy, but she had a smile on her face the whole time, and Zee was a joy to work with, playing up to the camera at every opportunity.

So, here's some of my favourites from our walk.

Tristy & Chris - Surrey Wedding - Mannings Heath Hotel

Tristy and Chris got hitched a little over a week ago in a small family affair that was filled with emotion, joy and lots of fun.
A couple of months before their wedding we got together for an engagement shoot, which is a great way for me to get to know my couples better before their big day.
There was a bit of a golf theme running through the wedding and the engagement shoot as both were held at separate golf courses, fitting I suppose with the PGA going on recently.

Natalie and Adrian - Surrey Wedding - Burford Bridge

Natalie and Adrian tied the knot a little over a week ago at the, very local to me, Burford Bridge. It's one of the closest wedding venues to me, and I know the venue very well as I have a business Breakfast meeting there every week.

I did Natalie and Adrian's Pre Wedding shoot on the top of Box Hill and in Denbies Vineyard a little while ago. Pre Wed's are great for getting to know each other better so that you know what to expect on your wedding day. You can find their pre wed photos here.

It turned out to be another balmy day for their wedding, which was fairly lucky given the weather of late.
Anyway, a great day was had by all, as you can see from the photos below.

Bridal Art - Action Bridal

I'm including this here as something of a curiosity.
I did this a little while ago with the idea of offering a Post (or Pre) wedding shoot, along the lines of a Trash the Dress Shoot, but with a much more fun, quirky and Art based theme.

The idea was to offer Bridal Art Shoots. Where I offer to do Bridal shoot, but then to use my Artistic skills to create something really Arty!

So, to put together a portfolio of the kind of thing I could do, I did a shoot with the theme of 'Action Heroes!'

This is the image I created.

The above image was the result of a lot of time and effort, as you can see from the original, unedited photo below.

I have another partially done image where I'm turning a bride into an Angel.
I do have other ideas as well, so maybe if anyone was interested in a Bridal Art shoot and fancied being turned into a Super Hero, or Robot or whatever your imagination might cook up, then let me know!

Bridal Photography West Wittering with Sarah

OK, the behind the scenes Website work is done and I now offer a much better Online Ordering System.
From now on, every wedding I complete will be uploaded to a password protected online ordering gallery, even if you booked your wedding with me ages ago.

A little while ago I went down to the beaches at West Wittering, and did a Bridal Shoot with Sarah there in the dunes. It was incredibly windy and I'm still finding sand in the stuff I took with me. But, I feel the images were worth it.

Chris and Amy, Surrey Wedding Photos, RAC Club.

Before I speak about the lovely wedding of Chris and Amy, a bit of admin.

I'm planning a big shift of the Website, but it's all admin stuff and behind the scenes, however, there might be a short time when the Website is down (Hopefully less then 24 hours) and I might not get emails through the normal email address, however, please bare with me and the site will be back up soon and it will mean I can offer a better service to my clients.

So, on with the show.

Chris and Amy's wedding also had the odd light shower of rain, like Annemarie and Lynton's before it, but again, it really couldn't hope to dampen anyone's spirits.
Chris looked resplendent in pink, as did the bridesmaids, and Amy looked ravishing.
The RAC Club really was a stunning venue with excellent hospitality, I'd highly recommend it.

So, I'm sure you're wanting to see some photos, so here's some of my favourites.

Surrey Wedding Photographer - Annemarie & Lynton, Sandhurst Millitary Academy

My first wedding at Sandhurst Military academy, and the weather certainly made things interesting. But, although we did get a sprinkling of rain, never once was the joy of the day dampened.
While on the camp, I did hear rummers of some royals being on site watching the Polo match that was played not to far from our marquee. Which is probably why the security was as tight as it was.
There never was any chance of gate crashers at this wedding.

As you'll see below, we did a quick Pre-Wed Photo session during my venue meeting with Annemarie and Lynton before it was onto the big day a few weeks later.

I really did have a great time with Annemarie, Lynton and their family, and I think it shows in the photos.
So, enough of my yammerings, here's some snaps!

Surrey Wedding Photographer - Tania & Andrew - Wotton House

I'd been looking forward to this one. I work with Tania on shoots quite a lot as she is a Make Up Artist, so it was a real honour when she asked if I would cover her Wedding to Andrew.

Yep, her now-husband is also called Andrew, this has led to the occasional misunderstanding over the years when talking to clients. No such confusion on the day though.

Andrew is a fire fighter and had the whole watch there on the big day in full dress uniform regalia complete with silver axe.
The wedding was held at Wotton House near Dorking, a very local venue for me and one I'm rather fond of due to the stunning grounds behind the house. Truly a photographers paradise.
The wedding was held outside in their Turtle House on a lovely warm day, followed by a BBQ on the terrace.

Anyway, enough of my nattering, lets see some photos.

Natalie and Adrian are getting married a little later on this year, and as the time approaches, we took the opportunity to meet up and do a pre-wedding, or engagement shoot.
They're getting married at the Burford Bridge Hotel near Dorking, which is sat right at the foot of Box hill, which is where we met up and took some photos.

Wedding Photography Surrey - Jackie and Jim - Gate Street Barn

Well, this was a record, I was booked for this wedding literally about 4 days before the day itself.
Jim and Jackie (of Jackie Quinn Estate Agents in Ashtead, Surrey) seem to do everything at the last minute, and joked that the wedding was booked through lastminute.com!

However, the tight time scale of the booking seems to have really focused their efforts and the day really went with a swing! Everyone had a great time and the general mood was one of fun and enjoyment, which is what a wedding should be!

So, without further ado, here's some of my favourites!

Gate Street Barn, a wonderful location with very helpful staff. They gave us and the band desert, so they get my highest accolade!

One Stop Openning

They had a clown and a Cheque Presentation to a local charity and a really nice time was had by all.

Wow, it's been way too long since I updated this blog. Well, I suppose that's what comes from having a very young baby I suppose.

It's been a busy few weeks for me with commission's and shoots and such. I have a portrait shoot with a very cute little girl that I want to blog about soon for a start.

In the mean time I want to show some photos that I did for my portfolio. I'm always keen to do photography projects outside of my work as it keeps me fresh, lets me try ideas and play with lighting, all of which helps to inform my paid work and hopefully improve it.
Plus, being a generally creative soul, doing the odd shoot for myself keeps me happy!

So, recently I put together a Bridal shoot at the stunning Fetcham Park House with a couple of dresses which were kindly supplied by 'From this Moment' in Ewell.

Well, the smiles continue!

James is growing up all to quickly it seems. We visited James Grandparents and Great Grandparents (The Nottinghamshire branch) recently and he went down a storm with the family. The trip went well too with him sleeping all the way there and back again.

A little over a week ago it was Gary and Charlotte's time to get married and I was lucky enough to be there to record the day for them.
It was my first time at Pembroke Lodge, and it really does make for a stunning wedding venue with some amazing views.

The wedding went very well indeed, and although it was a little chilly outside, it was also bright and sunny!

The sun really was very bright.

That brightness made my usual off camera flash shots a touch more challenging, but I love a challenge and I'm really rather pleased with the results.

Doesn't time fly!
James is almost 5 weeks old now and already we can see a huge difference in him. He's bigger and rounder in the face now and it slowly developing a personality of his own.
His list of firsts is slowly building too including his first smile.
He's early doing this, according to the boffins who measure these things, but it's definitely a smile and not just wind.

Look...

If that's not a smile I don't know what is.

Anyway, another shoot with a newborn this last week. This time it was the turn of George!
George had had a bad night the morning I arrived and was a touch grouchy, but that's fine, babies are babies after all.
The shoot went well with lots of time outs so George could feed and calm down when things just got a little too much for him.

Bump to Baby Photography in Surrey

The blog has suffered from a lack of posting recently, and I shall try to rectify that in the coming weeks.

It's been a busy few weeks though since my last post as, since becoming a Dad, I've come to realise the importance of recording those special early moments in your child's life.
Being a photographer, this is something which comes naturally to me, but it might not be something that everyone can do, which is why I'm launching my Bump to Baby service on my Website.

Launching a new service like this it's important to have a portfolio of images to show what you can do, so these past couple of weeks have involved several shoots with newborns to create the images you can see on my site.

It's been a little while since my last post, but there's a very good reason for this, and that reason is keeping us up at night.

A little over a week ago my wife gave birth to our first child, a beautiful bouncing baby boy who we named James.

Naturally, as a photographer, James has become my new Muse and I'm snapping away with him most days. James will no doubt become a regular subject of this blog now he's arrived, and so, let's kick things off with a few from James' first week!

New Sample Albums

The wedding album is perhaps the most important thing you will get from your wedding day. True, you don't see it until a good amount of time after your wedding, unlike your dress let's say, but after your wedding, your dress is usually cleaned, put in a box and then left in the loft for years to come. The cake is eaten, the flowers die, and the suits are returned.

Only your album immortalises these things and allows you to look back and remember them quickly and easily.
You may well have a disk of images, but sitting round the computer and waiting for it to boot up and then flicking through the images one at a time is not quite the same as turning the pages of your thick leather album.

With that in mind, I've recently added a few more Album options to my wedding packages and I'd like to take a moment to show you what you can have if you book your wedding through me.

Even the wrapping oozes quality. Those are Pineapple leaves apparently.

A 30 side Landscape Album with an optional Accent Leather stripe and single cut-out for for an image.
You can have this style of Album with one of a wide range of cover options, from many different Leathers and silks to Metal and Timber.

For the traditionalists I now offer a matted album option, reminiscent of my parents Wedding Album but with a modern style to it. This one has a print indented onto the white leatherette cover.

Here's the inside, I deliberately made the prints shine to show the glossy print under the matt which frames it.

Here you can see that the matts are white but with a black core which you can see on the bevelled edge of the frame. These matts can be white or black with a white or black core.

All these albums are ready for viewing at my wedding meetings with new clients.

Wedding Photographer Surrey - Hannah & Ken - Selsdon Park Hotel

My first wedding of 2010 happened very recently in Purley with the lovely Hannah & Ken! The day was certainly cold, but we avoided the snow which has since blanketed the country. Ken and his family actually come from Australia, so I doubt they enjoyed this rather colder then usual British Winter.
My assistant and I had a great time with Hannah's siblings (all 9 of them) who were all real characters and really played up to the camera as you will see.

Here's a few of my favourites from the day.

When Melissa called me and aksed if I would do a shoot for her and her work collegues down at Denbies Wine Estate near Dorking, I said of course!
She wanted something a little different to the same old white background shots that everyone has, so I let me creativity run slightly wild and had a great time with them, despite the cold.

One of the services I offer is a Make Over Shoot. It's very similar to a standard portrait shoot, but with a Make Over incorporated into it. The shoot is more of a beauty shoot then a standard portrait shoot.

I was recently contacted by Shelley who wanted to do a shoot as a gift to her daughter who was going to go travelling. We had a great day on the shoot and Amy was a natural in front of the camera.

Shere Wedding Photographer - Darren & Naomi

This wedding holds the record for the latest booked wedding I've ever done, as I was booked just a couple of weeks in advance. But, that didn't stop it being an amazing day. The recent snow fall had turned the Surrey village of Shere into a winter wonderland reminiscent of the end of Bridget Jones Diary, the wedding scene of which was filmed in this church!

The film connections continued with the Groom Darren, who works for Universal and happens to look a bit like George Clooney.

The wedding was a lot of fun, and here's my favourites.

I knew I was in the right area when I found this.

I loved this cake, by far the most inventive Wedding cake I've seen yet!

Shoot with Holly, a dancer in the new film 'Nine' with Judi Dench & Nicole Kidman

During the summer I had the good fortune to do a shoot with Holly, a friend of a friend who's a dancer. While doing the shoot she told me about a film she had recently been doing called 'Nine' with Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, and Sophia Loren and directed by Rob Marshall.
Holly is one of the dancers in the film.

We had a great shoot and I hope to work with her again soon.

Surrey Bridal Photographer - Michael & Sara's Pre Wedding Shoot

Wow,it's been way too long since I last posted to my blog, something I'll be rectifying as of today.

It's been a mad few weeks for me. It's been both great and frustrating both at the same time, great because I've had a lot of work to be getting on with, doing some amazing shoots, something you will see in the upcoming posts, and also frustrating due to a Hard Drive crash that I had.
I didn't loose anything, but at came at just the wrong moment really, so that wasn't fun!

Anyway, on with the photos.

I was contacted by Michael and Sara who are getting married in China very shortly to do a pre wedding Bridal shoot for them, something of a tradition in China I'm led to believe.
We met up in Windsor and had a lovely walk around the town getting some funny looks as we went.

Here's a selection of the results.

Well, I've done the last wedding I currently have booked for this year (although there's still time for a last minute booking!), so i thought I'd fill the winter months with some posts about some of the other things I've been getting up to in the mad world of photography.

To start with I'm going to show you a family shoot I did with Alan and Laura Chesterfield and their two girls Isabella (5) and Amelia(2).
We met up at Polesden Lacy in Bookham and played hide and seek and lots of other games with me snapping away throughout.
We had a great time, the weather was sunny and it wasn't too busy either.

Caro & Davids Wedding at Kensington Palace, London

Earlier in the year I posted the Photos from Caro and Davids Pre-Wedding shoot here, which we did in the grounds of Kensington Palace seeing as that's where they were getting married, and now I'd covered their wedding there too.

It was an Over cast day to start with, but that soon passed and we were treated to some blue sky's and sunshine. We were however inside for most of the time, within the sumptuous rooms of Kensington Palace.

The wedding itself happened inside the Palaces Chapel with the Drinks reception in the Kings Gallery and the Meal in the Orangery.
There was some challenging lighting conditions, but everything ran very smoothly and a good time was had by everyone.

What was it with the weather this Autumn? It's been really quite barmy, which was perfect for Frances and Dan's Wedding.

Frances, by the way, goes by the nick name Bloss for reason's that escape me at the moment, just in case you were wondering who the Bloss in this posts title was.

Dan and Bloss booked me for their wedding literally 1 month before the big day, which I think is a record for a last minute booking for me, so far.
The day was lovely and really quite moving at times due to a recent loss in the family, and it was an honor to be invited to cover their big day.

Here's a few favorites;

Father and Daughter.

He tries to be all suave and sophisticated, but he's a big softy really.

Um...maybe not.

I was so jealous.

The vicars sermon was really rather amusing.

We had to take a walk to find places for the Bridal shots, but it was worth it I think.

It really was a lovely day.

Marquees are really nice and light during the day, perfect for us Photographers.

This story was brought to my attention by my wife, who's parents saw the Article in Mail. You can see the Article here CLICK HERE

Reading through the Article and looking at the photos, clearly the couple were right to take legal action, the photos and video are shocking, no one should have their memories ruined by photos of that quality.

If thats the standard of the photographers work however, I'm really not sure how they ended up choosing him after going to 11 Wedding fairs.
Thats said, the compatition for spaces on wedding fairs is incredibly fierce, with the spaces to allocate to photographer often selling out in a matter of minutes, and with the fair organisers not checking the quality of a photographers work, (generally they just want to sell the spaces) is it any surprise that they get a few cowboys there???

Here's a few tips for picking your wedding photographer;

1. Do your research.
Hunt online, go to wedding fairs, but most importantly, go and meet your shortlisted photographers. Look at their work, and maybe ask to see a complete wedding or an album from a complete wedding. Ask if the photos you are seeing are their own work or is it the work of someone else? If they are a genuine photographer, they will be happy to answer these questions and put you at ease.

2. Professional organisations.
Do not base your choice of photographer purely on whether they are part of a 'Professional Organisation such as the SWPP, MPA, BIPP etc etc. The photographer in the Article above was part of the SWPP, which might make you wonder about that organisations quality control. Just because the photographer is part of an organisation does not mean they are nessesarily good at what they do. There are a lot of very good, very high quality photographers out there who are not part of these organisations.

3. Money.
Don't let money scare you off and don't let it be your only determining factor. You may wish to spend all your money on your dress, or the flowers, after all, they will look pretty on the day, where as a photographer is just a man/woman with a camera. However, 24 hours after your big day, your dress is in the box - never to be worn again (Unless you go for a Trash the Dress Shoot), your flowers are dead, the guests are gone, the wine is down the loo with the cake.
Only your Wedding photos remain to remind you of your day.
Do you want great memories, or dark and out of focus ones???

4. Contract and insurance etc.
A true professional will have you sign a contract and will be protected by Professional indemnity and public liability insurance, check your photographer has these.

5. Back Up.
Again, a Pro will have back up equipment and back up photographers they can call on should the worst happen, once again, check they have these.

6. Go with your gut.
Finally, make sure you're happy with your choice. If something feels wrong, then it possibly is. Make sure you get on with your photographer as well, as apart from your guests, he/she's the only one who will be with for most if not all of the day, so it's important you like them as a person.

So, good luck searching for your photographer.

Ben & Roz at Southwater and Wotton House near Dorking in Surrey

At the weekend Ben and Roz became husband and wife after getting married at Holy Innocents Church in Southwater and then moving onto Wotton House near Dorking in Surrey for the celebration, and i was there as their photographer.

It wasn't all that long ago that we met up for their Engagement shoot at Wotton House, and this time they both seemed much more at home before the camera.

The weather was warm and sunny (unusual for September) and a great time was had by all. Here's some of my favourite photos from the day.

I do love a good Bridal portrait session, and this one really didn't let me down. Jen and Phil got married about 2 years ago (I didn't cover their wedding) but their wedding day was wet and cold meaning they didn't get the photos they hoped for. So they contacted me and asked if they could do a Trash the Dress shoot.

Of course I said yes, and we got down to organising it.

The day went swimmingly well with Jen and Phil both being up for any crazy idea I might have had. As a result, I'm really happy with the resultant photos and you can find my favourites below.

Marsha & Marino - Surrey Wedding, Aerodrome Hotel, Croydon & Upper Norwood R.C. Church

Expect the unexpected, it's a good motto to live your life by, and as a wedding photographer, I think it's a pretty good motto too. My most recent wedding with Marsha and Marino had some great little (and big) moments in it, many of them unexpected.
